October 3

2333BC According to Korean legend, Dangun, the "grandson of heaven", established Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom on October 3, 2333 BC. Korea emerged as a singular political entity when the Goryeo Korean dynasty was established in 918 by King Taejo. It united the Later Three Kingdoms in 936 and ruled most of the Korean Peninsula until the dynasty was removed by the founder of the Joseon in 1392.

52BC Between 58-51 BC, the Romans under Julius Caesar subdued Gaul selling thousands of Belgic tribes into slavery by a process of total annihilation of Gaelic forces. At the Battle of Alesia, Caesar's 100,000 troops were outnumbered 4:1 but they still won when on October 3, 52BC Vercingetorix, leader of the Gauls, surrendered to the Romans. Ancient historians are notorious for exaggerating numbers of this kind, but Caesar's conquest of Gaul was certainly the greatest military triumph since the campaigns of Alexander the Great.

1226 By 1226, Francis of Assisi was a very sick man, in great pain from gastric ulcers, often feverish from malaria and growing blind from an eye condition he had contracted in the East. When the saint realized he was dying he was happy. He sent a farewell letter to Chiara of the sister order The Poor Clares and asked for his favorite marzipan and some music. Francis died on the evening of October 3, 1226 at the Church of St Mary of the Angels in Portinuncula Assisi singing Psalm 142, "Voce mea ad Dominum".

1692 In 1692, the town of Salem in Massachusetts, and surrounding areas experienced one of America's most infamous cases of mass hysteria, the Salem Witch Trials. More than 150 suspected witches were put on trial and 19 hanged. On October 3, 1692 Puritan clergy in Salem, agreed there would be no more executions resulting from the witch trials.

1833 After attending a performance of Shakespeare's Hamlet in September 1827, the French composer Hector Berlioz fell in love with a pretty Irish actress, Harriet Smithson, who played Ophelia. Berlioz wrote his Symphonie fantastique in 1830 as a way to express his unrequited passion. By late 1832 Smithson's career was failing and the actress saw the besotted composer as a way out of debt so they wed on October 3, 1833. Their marriage was happy for several years, but they separated in 1843.

1896 The British poet and designer William Morris died of tuberculosis on October 3, 1896 when he was 62 years old. His funeral was held two days later, during which his corpse was carried from Hammersmith to Paddington rail station, where it was transported to Oxford, and from there to Kelmscott, where it was buried in the churchyard of St. George's Church.

1896 Queen Victoria became the first British monarch to be captured on moving film on October 3, 1896. She was shown taking a pony-and-trap ride at Balmoral Castle during a visit by Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra. The invitation to film this event went to John Downey, the son of the court photographer, William Downey, who had first photographed Queen Victoria in the 1860s.


1916 James Herriot was the nom de plume of English veterinary surgeon and writer James Alfred Wight  who was born on October 3, 1916. Wright used his many years of experiences as a vet in the Yorkshire Dales to write a series of books each consisting of stories about animals and their owners. He is best known for these semi-autobiographical works, beginning with If Only They Could Talk in 1970, which spawned a series of movies and television series.

1918 A pigeon, Cher Ami, flew 25 miles (40 kms) on October 3, 1918 to deliver the S.O.S. message of a lost, encircled battalion despite being shot through the breast, blinded in one eye, covered in blood, and with a leg hanging only by a tendon. He saved the lives of 194 soldiers. Cher Ami, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for its service during World War I.

1942 Wernher von Braun was the greatest German rocket scientist. Among his designs were the V-2 ballistic missile used by Germany during World War II. The first successful launch of a V-2 rocket was made from Test Stand VII at Peenemünde, Germany on October 3, 1942. 21 months after its first successful launch , a V-2 rocket became the first man-made object to travel into space.

The first Buffalo Wings were the brainchild of Teressa Bellissimo and made at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York on October 3, 1964 - hence the name.

1990 On October 3, 1990, The German Democratic Republic ceased to exist and its territory became part of the Federal Republic of Germany. East German citizens became part of the European Community, which later became the European Union. Following the reunification of Germany, East and West Berlin were once more reunited and Berlin became once again the national capital. October 3rd is now celebrated every year as German Unity Day.

1992 Barack Obama first met Michelle Robinson when he was employed as a summer associate at the Chicago law firm of Sidley Austin. Assigned for three months as Obama's adviser at the firm, Robinson joined him at several group social functions. The couple's first date was to the Spike Lee movie Do the Right Thing, They married on October 3, 1992 at Trinity United Church in Chicago.


1995 Former American football star OJ Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her waiter friend Ron Goldman were found stabbed to death in June 1994 outside Nicole's condominium. Simpson was a person of interest in their murders, but he was cleared of them on October 3, 1995. His trial came after 95 million American TV viewers had watched police chase his white Ford Bronco to arrest him.
