c 500 It is acceptable for a woman to propose to a man on February 29th. The custom has been attributed to St. Bridget (c. 451 – 525), who is said to have complained to St. Patrick about women having to wait for men to propose marriage. Patrick supposedly gave women one day to propose.


1288 In 1288 Queen Margaret of Scotland made a ruling that on Leap Year Day, a woman could propose marriage to the man of her choice. She also stated that any man who refused a proposal on leap year must pay a fine or buy the woman 12 pairs of gloves.

1468 Alessandro Farnese was born on February 29, 1468 in Lazio, Italy. Later, he became Pope Paul III — he was the only Pope we know was born on a leap year day. Due to less meticulous record-keeping in earlier centuries, it's possible other Popes were also born on leap year days, but their exact dates may not be recorded.

1504 Christopher Columbus was anchored off Jamaica and rations were low (the natives wouldn't trade). The explorer learned from his Zacuto almanac that on February 29, 1504 there was to be an eclipse of the moon. Columbus summoned the Jamaican chiefs and told them if they don't give him food he had the power to blot out the moon. They laughed but then the eclipse begun.The terrified natives begged him to bring the moon back and they would give him what he wanted.

1792 The Italian composer Gioachino Antonio Rossini was born on February 29, 1792 into a family of musicians in Pesaro, a town on the Adriatic coast of Italy that was then part of the Papal States. He is widely recognized as one of the most prominent composers of the 19th century, particularly known for his contributions to the opera genre. They include The Barber of Seville (Il barbiere di Siviglia) and William Tell (Guillaume Tell). 

1860 American inventor Herman Hollerith was born on February 29, 1860 in Buffalo, New York, to German immigrant parents. His most notable invention, the punched card tabulating machine, revolutionized data processing and laid the foundation for the development of modern computers.

2004 Peter Jackson's live action The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy was released in three installments. All three parts won multiple Academy Awards, including consecutive Best Picture nominations. The final installment of this trilogy, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, was the second film to break the one-billion-dollar barrier and on February 29, 2004 it won a total of 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.

2016 Reality television personality Arthur Green, from dating show The Bachelor NZ , achieved the World Record for the Loudest Crunch of an Apple, after a huge 79.1 dB(C) bite. His record crunch was made on February 29, 2016 in Auckland, New Zealand. His record was broken by Felix Michels from Germany who achieved a crunch of 84.6 decibels (dB) on the set of the German TV show So Geht Das on November 7, 2017.
